EU Accessibility Act & WCAG, explained
Since 28 June 2025, the European Accessibility Act requires many websites to meet WCAG 2.1 AA. Here's what that means and how to check where you stand.
- What is the European Accessibility Act (EAA)?
- The European Accessibility Act is EU legislation requiring many digital products and services — including websites and mobile apps for e-commerce, banking, transport, and more — to be accessible to people with disabilities. Its requirements began applying on 28 June 2025.
- Does the EU Accessibility Act apply to my website?
- It commonly applies to businesses that sell products or services to consumers in the EU, especially e-commerce, banking and financial services, transport, telecoms, and e-books. Micro-enterprises providing services may be exempt, but the safest step is to check your site against WCAG 2.1 AA.
